Memorial Day, prior to 2020: Festive parades, family picnics, trips to visit our predecessors at the cemetery, peonies and irises to lay at the gravestones, miniature American flags lining the drives, large flags flying from doorposts and bunting draping porches, ceremonies honoring our veterans, the playing of “Taps” on a lone bugle, beautiful May temperatures, the sounds of happy school-free children, the smells of flower beds, BarBQ grills, and the official start of summer...
Memorial Day 2020: it looks much different this year, doesn’t it? Some of us have never experienced such a drastic cultural and life change as this. Others remind us that we have indeed experienced cataclysmic change before, as a nation and as a people. And they tell us, “this too shall pass.” And, “the only constant in life is the love and steadfast faithfulness of our God. The only firm Foundation is found in God’s excellent Word.”
This weekend, when we aren't yet gathering to lift our voices together in praise and worship, take joy in knowing that thousands upon thousands who have gone before us, and thousands upon thousands of heavenly angels, are joining you in praise of “the glories of our God and King, the triumphs of His grace!” And remember that our Foundation is indeed firm. “Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand upheld by My righteous, omnipotent Hand.”
Enjoy the two videos today: “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” and “How Firm a Foundation.”
